WATCH: Beware: Fake Water Now Being Sold

BEIJING: Food safety regulators in China are now looking at a very new set of guidelines for bottled water being sold.

This comes after consumer confidence was hit by following several reports of fake bottled water and the lack of a nationwide standard.

With consumer confidence hit, products like water purifiers are now seeing an increase in demand.

It is becoming a common sight in the Chinese capital for the deliveries of bottled water.

Many households now have switched to drinking bottled water because of fears over the tap water quality.
Fan Zi Sheng, manager of Zhejiang Lonsid Healthy Drinking Water Equipment Company, said: "Some of the fake bottled water could be filled with tap water or even water of worse quality."

Fake water is common in China because of the huge profits involved.

Wu Zhi An, operator of Water Station, said: "Right now there are too many suppliers of fake water. In Beijing, about 70 per cent of bottled water are fake. Suppliers of fake water can make about a few hundred thousand Yuan a year, that's a huge profit. But for us, we earn about ten times less."

Real bottled water is costly because producers have to clean and sanitise the recycled bottles before filling them with distilled or mineral water.

Zhang Baocheng, general manager of Beijing Tri- high Membrane Technology, said: "As people's incomes grow, it's not a lot of money to them. In addition, with higher expectations on the quality of life, the consumer finds it worthwhile as long as the product brings a little bit of improvement (to health)."
